In this episode of the Cambridge Tech Podcast, hosts Faye Holland and James Parton sit down with Alex Murray, co-founder of Flit, to explore the innovative world of electric bikes, smart mobility solutions, and the challenges of running a hardware startup in Cambridge. This conversation is packed with insights for tech founders, venture capitalists, and those passionate about sustainability and urban mobility.
A Serendipitous Beginning
Alex’s entrepreneurial journey started in China while studying public policy and learning Mandarin at Tsinghua University. His love for cycling, coupled with his passion for improving urban mobility, led him to meet his co-founder, an automotive engineer. Together, they identified a gap in the European e-bike market: folding electric bikes designed for urban commuters.
“Electric bikes in China are completely different from what we see here in the UK and Europe,” Alex explains. “We saw the potential and decided to bring a more practical, compact solution to the European market.”
Their startup story is a perfect blend of technical expertise and commercial foresight, which highlights the importance of diverse founding teams.
Why Cambridge?
When it came to choosing a base for their company, Flit chose Cambridge—famed for its high cycling rates, strong engineering talent, and dynamic startup ecosystem.
"Cambridge was the ideal choice for us. It's a cycling hotspot, it has a great engineering talent pool, and it's home to a thriving startup community. We could find everything from investors to specialist accountants here."
With Flit headquartered just a stone’s throw away from the heart of Cambridge, Alex highlights the advantages of building a mobility-focused business in a city known for innovation.
Scaling Up: The Market for E-Bikes
Europe is the leading market for electric bikes, with Germany and the Netherlands leading the charge. While the UK is behind, it’s catching up, particularly in the urban mobility sector.
“The European market is booming, and while the UK is a bit behind in adoption, we're seeing rapid growth. In Germany and the Netherlands, 50% of new bikes sold are e-bikes. In the UK, it's around 10%, but we’ll get there."
This increasing demand is driven by several factors, from environmental concerns to government incentives like the cycle-to-work scheme.
Innovative Design and Production
One of the standout aspects of Flit’s product is the unique folding design. Flit has patents in place for its lightweight, compact e-bike, designed specifically for urban commuters who need something practical for daily use.
“Folding bikes have been around for over 100 years, but we knew we could innovate. We used cutting-edge techniques like adhesive bonding, commonly used in aerospace, to create a design that folds better and is more compact."
Flit's commitment to innovation doesn’t stop at design. The company also developed an efficient manufacturing process, which allowed them to bring production back to the UK, securing local jobs and increasing their ability to scale up.
Circular Economy and the Future of Mobility
Flit is not just focused on product innovation, but also sustainability. Alex explains that the company is actively working on solutions for refurbishing and reintroducing e-bikes to the market at the end of their lease terms. This ties into a broader trend towards the circular economy.
“We’re exploring how to refurbish bikes efficiently and how to handle end-of-life batteries, a big challenge in the electric mobility space."
